FADespite injuring his right foot on February 27th, pitcher Chris Sale of the White Sox has made a full return to his old form. All of his teammates agree that it’s great to have Sale back. “I just try to get outs,” Sale said. “I try to change it up a little and mix it up. Whatever works.” But manager Robin Ventura believes it’s more than that.

“It’s not just that he rears back and fire it. He’s pitching,” Ventura said. “No matter what you sit on, if you’re not sitting on the right thing, you’re probably not going to hit him.” Both Sale and Ventura believe that Sale’s return was less concerning because the injury was to his foot and not his arm.

“It wasn’t even my push-off foot,” Sale said, downplaying the injury, which happened when he hopped off his truck. “I’m not hurt anymore. I’m back to being a baseball player.”

Full recovery is much more difficult if one continues to play sports with a foot or ankle injury. If you would like assistance with an injury, see Dr. James Ricketti of New Jersey. Dr. Ricketti will assess your injury and provide you with a quality treatment plan.

Playing Sports with Foot Injuries
Many types of foot injuries affect athletes over the course of their athletic career. Despite their setbacks, many of these athletes will continue to play with mild foot injuries and attempt to ‘push’ through the pain. In order to be able to prevent injuries, it is important to stretch before any activity, wear proper footwear and replace shoes as needed. Some of the foot and ankle injuries athletes are at risk for include:

  • Turf toe- upward bending of the big toe outside normal range of motion
  • Stress Fractures
  • Overpronation- excessive foot movement during gait
  • Plantar Fasciitis- swollen ligament in the foot’s base
  • Strains

For more serious injuries it is recommended to consult with a podiatrist or orthopedic specialist as fractures and other serious conditions may require surgery.
